Dr. Wes Stephen is on the Board of Directors for the Centre of Excellence, and also holds the role of Executive Vice President of Clinical Operations and Chief Operating Officer at Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) since 2017. As Executive Vice President and COO for Clinical Operations at Hamilton Health Sciences, he is accountable for clinical programs and clinical support services. Prior to his appointment as HHS’s Executive Vice President, Clinical Operations & COO he was the Chief of Staff at the Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington. He is an accomplished surgeon who has held multiple hospital and university leadership positions. Dr. Stephen worked as a Colorectal/General Surgeon at Hamilton Health Sciences and was part of the faculty of McMaster University from 2002-2013. Dr. Stephen brings extensive knowledge of HHS to his new position including that of Surgeon-in-Chief from 2008 to 2013. He’s at one time or another held various positions at the university and Hamilton Health Sciences such as Academic Head of General Surgery, Service Chief of General Surgery and Regional Head of Surgical Oncology at Cancer Care Ontario. He has also held several scholarly and professional roles. He was the President of the Canadian Colorectal Society and an Examiner on the Board of General Surgery with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Stephen is a graduate of Dalhousie University where he received his M.D.in 1985, followed by his General Surgery Residency in 1990. He completed his Colorectal Fellowship at the University of Toronto in 1991. He is also a graduate of the Rotman Advanced Health Care Leadership Program at the University of Toronto.  Dr. Stephen proudly accepted the appointment of Director of the Chronic Pain Centre of Excellence Board – “Not only do our veterans protect our rights and freedoms, they also provide services and aid to those in need.  During and post completion of their duties, many veterans also develop health care needs.  The Centre of Excellence is on such way I and others can contribute to our service men and women to who we owe so much.”

Leadership & Board
The Centre of Excellence’s Board of Directors oversees the operations and financials of the Centre of Excellence as a not-for-profit, and includes veterans, industry leaders, and chronic pain experts from McMaster University Faculty of Health Sciences and Hamilton Health Sciences Corporation.
