Description

As Veterans transition from military to civilian life, they are often referred to interdisciplinary and/or other programs for chronic pain management. Prior to entering, as they enter, and on discharge from, these programs, Veterans are often presented with self-education tools to help understand, track, and manage their chronic pain.

While we know these self-education tools exist, it is unknown to what extent self-education is effective, or what aspects of self-education may be useful, in helping Veterans manage their chronic pain. This research project is aimed at studying the effectiveness and most successful features of evidence-based self-education for Veterans managing chronic pain. This will be a one-year research project.

Objectives

  • Conduct a systematic review of the literature reporting on evidence-based self-education programs or resources and their effectiveness with an emphasis on, but not limited to, Veterans.
  • Analyze the feature sets of the models (i.e., format, frequency, components, content, etc.) to identify potential gaps and/or areas for improvement.
  • Determine the optimal feature set to inform future evidence-based self-education models for Veterans.

Funding Available

The total funding available for this one-year research project is $120,000 CAD.
